What is a Road Rally?

A road rally is a clue-based scavenger hunt, where teams compete against each other with a goal of accumulating the most points.  Teams drive to various locations within a specified area, then search for and solve clues.  For the LPELL Road Rally:

  1. The rally location will be concentrated in the greater Highlands County area.

  2. There are approximately 10-12 main clues.

  3. A “solved” clue leads teams to their next destination.

  4. All teams have the same major clues.  Clues are marked by team name for easy identification.

  5. Optional bonus and picture clues are also available and solving these increase a team’s total score.

  6. Each rally has a specific “theme” and the team names, clues, and bonuses are generally based around that theme.

The team earning the most points, (total of all correctly solved, bonus clues and picture clues), win; number of winning teams depends on the total number of paying participants.  The last clue takes everyone to a place where you can eat, drink, and perhaps dancing! The scores are tallied there and cash prizes are awarded.

NOTES:

  1. Expect to drive around 40 miles for the 2021 rally, (all destination routes are within 8 miles of each other.)

  2. Clues will test you mentally, and some bonus clues will slightly test you physically.  All clues require some degree of walking.

  3. Team size is limited from three (3) to five (5) people; all team members must fit (legally) into one vehicle. From past experience, teams of four work the best.

Are there prizes?

Yes, a fun night out would not be complete without some prizes!

** 1st and 2nd place team CASH prizes, (4 adults per car/team), based on the clues answered, correct envelope side opened, Bonus clues, clue location photographs, and best time. Mileage is considered if there is a tied score.

** Best "Happy Holidays!" costumes: 1 female, 1 male, and 1 couple costume prize.

** Best "Happy Holidays!" Decorated Ride, (1 vehicle) entry.

Team Strategy

Based on your team size, consider assigning specific tasks to each member of your team:

  1. Your DRIVER who is skilled and safe. (Note: ALL driver’s licenses and the vehicle insurance will be placed in a sealed envelope.  If it is opened at the end of the road rally, points will be deducted.

  2. A person, (YOUR NAVIGATOR), who will read and interpret maps and directions, and aid the driver as they travel to the next destination.

  3. Your remaining TEAM MEMBERS will be dedicated to solving clues, bonus and picture clues.

  4. Don’t wait too long to ask for help, if:

Your team is totally lost or unsure which direction to head.  You believe you are in the right location but can’t locate the clue after several minutes of searching.

Generally, most clues should be solvable 5-15 minutes after arriving at a clue location.  Be observant of the Rally Signs:

  1. HHRR (Happy Holidays! Road Rally) acronym, OR

  2. The LPELL Logo (like the one on this site’s main page)

These could be in chalk or pen, and on something like a lawn sign or the sidewalk.  The will indicate you are on the right path, and may even indicate what to do, which direction to head, etc.

What is Provided, and What to Bring?

You will be provided with a set of clue envelopes, general maps of the rally area, and Bonus and Picture Clue lists.

Your team’s ultimate success comes down to wits, skill, and sometimes what extra stuff you bring to the rally.

Obtaining Help

Ms. Joanie and Mrs. Rebeca will be available via cellphones to communicate help/assistance to your team on the MAIN CLUES only – no assistance is provided for the bonus or picture clues.  Amount of help given will depend on where you are at in the race, (respective to the other participating teams), with the main clues.

General help provided will not result in any lost points; for example, you read us the clue and tell where it led you, and we will indicate if you are in the correct general area or not. If you want or need more specific information it will likely cost you some points, based on how much or how detailed the information help is.

Notes:

  1. If you can prove you are at the correct location and no clue exists, no points will be deducted and the next cle will be immediately provided to you by text, (full point for the missing clue will be awarded to you.)

  2. You will always be informed in advance of how many points you are subject to lose, based on where you are and what information you are requesting.
